Snowboarding in Scotland
Tuesday, 11. 6. 2007 – Category: Snowboarding, Video
Living in London, you always look to mainland Europe when thinking about your next snowboarding trip. I’d been meaning to post this photo taken at Glencoe in Scotland earlier this year by the guys at Highland Instinct. What a cracking sight.

Added: just watched this cracking video of some lads hitting up Scottish backcountry…
Following on from the last post, maybe its time to give a bit more credit to the resources here for snowboarding in the UK.
Also worth a look is the Monthly Picture section also on the Highland Instinct website.

I went boarding in Scotland over a year ago. I had a good time but for me it just cannot compare to whats available in the Alps.
Saying that, I wouldnt be moaning if I lived within a short driving distance of Lecht; there was a park and everything there!

Scottish hills are ok. They can be good, they are a big gamble though for a number of reasons.
The mountains are small and the climate being surrounded my water, and being in the gulf stream means the climate is generally too mild to be all that reliable for mountains this small. Which must be very frustrating, beautiful powder can go melt overnight. If the mountains were inland on the same latitude it would be a different story.
The visibility can be very bad, and often is.
The winds up there gust hard and often.
Because the temps are generally not enough or consistently below, the air is often damp which feels a lot colder. Like a bitter cold.
So for sure, the Alps, or many of the other mountains in Europe before Scotland however because we live on an island unfortunately we can’t just get in our car when there has been a hard dump of pow in the Alps for a weekend because the crossing short notice is very pricy, same with flights. if going there it all needs to be pre-booked. So the Scottish mountains are the best option if you want to catch some fresh pow over a weekend last minute.
