Snowboard workout program
I found another snowboard orientated fitness program that looks pretty good. This one was set up by Ron McConnell, who trained Jake Burton after an accident acording to the website.
Since snowboarding involves many multi-joint movements that require a mixture of strength, balance, and flexibility, the conditioning program should reflect the same. The focus of these specific exercises is to prevent injuries and improve performance. Make no mistake, the best way to become a better rider is to ride! But to practice more, you want to be injury free!! This program should help.
There’s strength training broken down into lower body, upper body and torso; cardio with a choice of any “activity that uses the large muscle groups, you can maintain the required time and intensity, and is aerobic in nature (e.g., running, jogging, hiking, swimming, biking, stair climbing, rowing…”, daily flexibility stretches and injury prevention.
Additionally there is a section on something called plyometrics that I can honestly say is a word I’ve never heard of before.
Plyometrics increase strength and speed in a way that weight training by itself can’t. By training the muscle to contract quickly while overloaded you gain explosiveness and control under tension The rider needs this specific strength for jumps, landings, and uneven terrain.
I’ve eased off my training a bit since the Cervinia weekend, so will get myself down the gym tomorrow night and give some of this a try.
