Chamonix

Just came back from a week snowboarding in Chamonix.

Conditions were generally great. There was a massive dump after about 3 days, leaving fantastic powder for the remainders of our time there.

For those that haven’t been to Chamonix before, the town centre is a short bus ride from the various skiing areas. We spent most of our time at Le Brevent and Flegiere, with a couple of days at Le Tours and a morning at Le Planards.

Le Brevent

Consists of a selection of blue, red and black runs with a bit of off-piste through the trees. A gondola takes you to the top of the mountain for awesome views and a couple of black runs to choose from, leading you down to the main area consisting of a couple of blue runs, with a button lift half way down facilitating a makesift nursury slope.

At the bottom of the blues you have a choice of 3 chair lifts:

  1. Lift up Brevent to 2 red runs.
  2. Lift back up to the top of the Brevent blue runs.
  3. Lift over to the Flegiere skiing area.

The red runs are pretty cool and well worthwhile checking out. The 4th option here is to tale the long black run down to the bottom of Brevent. Its a very long and narrow run, quite flat in places. Can also be prone to being quite rocky, so watch out for your board/skis on this one.

Avoid the Altitude 2000 restaurant unless you’re down with paying 8 Euros for a coke.

Flegiere

Some cool runs on this bit of the mountain. A series of gondolas and chairlifts will get you here from the Brevent and is well worth the trip. The runs focus around L’Index, which gives a series of red, black and blue options and GREAT off-piste we were treated to on an awesome powder day. Also has a nice run that leads back in the direction of Brevent.

Les Tour

Bit of a mish mash of runs, the highlights being a blue run though an alpine tree-lined track leading to a chairlift that takes you to a selection of red runs. Prone to being somewhat colder than le Brevent and Flegiere.

Also should be mentioned are the Aiguille Du Midi and Grands Montets which by all accounts are amazing. Unfortunately things conspired against us when we were aiming to check them out, so they’re down for next time.
